I Read Some Books

Before I had a kid I worked a horrible, no good regular job downtown. I took public transit and passed the time by reading. It was sort of a way to relax both before and after work. Then I barely read at all the first two years of mommyhood. I didn't have the time or the interest. I'm happy that I made time to read 19 books last year! They certainly don't all qualify as literature, but it was nice having my nose stuck in a book most nights.

A Dog Year
Anne Frank: A Diary of a Young Girl
The Hunger Games
Catching Fire
Mockingjay
The Girl Who Played with Fire
Another Bullshit Night in Suck City
Bossypants
The Sisters Brothers***
The Color Purple
Bringing Up Bebe
Let's Pretend This Never Happened
Plainsong
Wishful Drinking
2001: A Space Odyssey
French Women Don't Get Fat
The Help*
Carpe Diem
Dracula*
How Georgia Became O'Keefe**
Robinson Crusoe

That's actually 21 books - so I can read, but I have trouble counting. And I also read Confessions of a Scary Mommy, but it's so short that I decided not to include it in the list (notice how I still told you about it, though). And I tried to read 50 Shades of Grey but I just could not handle the corny juvenile writing style (don't hate me).

*My favorites.
**My most favorite!
***The best cover art.

BTW: Most of these are linked to Goodreads ONLY because it was an easy way to show you the covers and the authors. It has nothing to do with promoting that website or any specific titles - I'm just lazy like that.

  1. I didn't have a lot of time to read as voraciously during my kiddos first few years too, but I've been making up for it now that he's school aged ;)

YA is still literature! And to be honest, most of it is better written than 50 Shades of Bullshit... Er, I mean Grey.

I'm planning on reading the Hunger Games series sometimes this year, once I make my way through some of the heavier reads on my list. I'd love to know what's on your "to read" list (if you have one) I'm always looking for more books to stick my nose in. :)

    1. I don't have a "to read" list. Well, not really. I have a habit of buying books at Goodwill and then they hang out on the shelf forever - so I should read some of those. Right now I'm reading Cold Mountain (it's only ok and I never saw the movie) and also Full Body Burden, which I found at the library. It's nonfiction about a plutonium factory in Colorado and the fleecing of the neighboring citizens. One book I'd like to take a stab at is Les Miserable...I don't know the story and I'm hesitant to see the movie prior to reading.

  2. I didn't read 50 Shades of Grey. It seemed really dumb!

    Are you on Goodreads? http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/9051305-starr

    1. Ok. I just found you and sent a friend thingy. I signed up years ago when I was in an actual book club, but then a human exploded from my stomach and I had to quit. I shall become reacquainted with the site - good call!

  3. I keep a book on my nightstand, but can barely find the time to read. Our daughter is a bit of a night owl and most nights I am just too tired to ready after I get her to sleep...some day! I did not read 50 Shades of Grey...it seemed to silly for me.

    1. I hear ya! My daughter goes to sleep around 9:15pm or so, but that's relatively recent (it used to be later). Your rest is more important than reading for sure!
